Parsing Seminary

Person / Case

Seminary – Today we are going to be looking at seminary itself.

Number

The number of people that seminary affects is truly incalculable. First and foremost this decision is going to affect the person going to seminary. Their life is going to look radically different for the next several years. Finances are going to be different than they were before, work schedules will change, and time management is going to change. There will be massive personal impact. If the student has a spouse or family, it will also have massive impact on them. They will have to make sacrifices and adjust to a new style of life for a while. But going beyond immediate family, everyone that attends seminary will have impact on other people. They will pass on their wisdom, open the scriptures, preach, teach, and fellowship with other believers. This spreads the impact wider than we can ever imagine. 1 student attending seminary could have an impact on thousands of people around the globe.

Gender

Neuter – Seminary is for everyone! There are many people who, unfortunately, see seminary as a men only place. This stems from many things that would take far too long to go into, however, it is an archaic way of looking at things. There are several denominations that take women as pastors, and even if a woman is not wanting to be a pastor, seminary is still a great option! Many seminaries offer a wide range of degrees, designed to set people up for a lifetime of ministry in various roles. Outside of the pastorate, seminary prepares men and women to run parachurch organizations, work as counselors, work as children’s directors, pastors, etc. It is even for people who have no desire to work in full time ministry, and just want to learn more about the faith so they can continue to serve and witness where they are! In short, seminary is for everyone who wants to learn more about the faith!

Tense

Seminary spans tenses! It has taken place for hundreds of years, perhaps longer depending on the definition of seminary. It is currently happening in schools across the globe, and educating and training Christian leaders for the next generation will continue in the future as well.

Voice

There is actually a good amount of people who are speaking about seminary, both globally and in terms of gender. As is with most of things in America, the focus seems to be focused on seminaries that are within the US. There are numerous good seminaries around the world that are training and equipping leaders. It used to be that seminary was a male dominated, and only men were speaking about it. But there has been a shift in culture that has been good, and needs to continue!

Mood

Seminary will affect your mood in a wide array of ways! Some of them good and some of them bad. There are moments of great satisfaction and joy that come with studying the Word of God on a deeper level, joy that comes from the relationships that are formed over the years studying together. But at the same time, there are moments of frustration, stress, and even anger. Throughout the course of completing a seminary degree, most students will experience the full range of emotions.

Lexical Form

At the core, seminaries are schools, typically graduate, that are tasked with teaching students about the faith. That being said, there are different kinds of seminaries that exist. Some focus more on academic scholarship, and some focus more on practical ministry.

Inflected Meaning

As you can see, there is a lot that goes into seminary! And the things that are listed above are only scratching the surface. Attending seminary is a huge step and commitment in someone’s life, and is not one that should be entered into lightly. It should be approached with much prayer, advice, and careful thought. It is trying season of life that is setting students up to serve in their callings more effectively. There will be times where you will love seminary and moments when you hate it and wonder why you signed up in the first place! But ultimately it is a means to a life serving Christ.
